Sierra On-Line Drivers for Sound Blaster AWE32 (repackaging)
============================================================

This is a repackaging of two existing after market patches
for several Sierra On-Line games, the AWE32 drivers patch
and the General MIDI patch.

This repackaging introduces new .HLP files and a cosmetically
modified driver file. Both help switch sound/music card
configurations after the official patches have been applied
as usually INSTALL.EXE may refuse to launch if "rogue" .DRV
driver files are found from the game directory.

*** Last updated: July 8, 2026 (file dates may have 1996) ***

This ZIP files contains the following files:
AWE16.DRV (Driver for 16-bit titles with GM support built-in)
AWE16.HLP (New driver .HLP file for INSTALL.EXE)
AWE16_P.DRV* (Modified driver for 16-bit titles requiring a patch)
AWE16_P.HLP (New driver .HLP file for INSTALL.EXE)
AWE32.DRV (Driver for 32-bit Protected Mode titles)
AWE32.HLP (New driver .HLP file for INSTALL.EXE)
AWESOL.ZIP (Original AWE32 drivers ZIP file)
GENMIDI.EXE (Original General MIDI driver and patches self-exec.)
README.TXT (This file)

 * Modified only by changing the text string "General MIDI for
Roland MPU Interface" to "Sound Blaster AWE32 (AWE16_P.DRV)".
This has been done for SQ4 Diskette version's INSTALL.EXE
as it seems to read the driver description from the driver
file itself and not a .HLP file.

Installation
------------

 1) OPTIONAL: Only relevant to titles requiring patching
    (see AWE16_P.DRV titles later).

Verify that the corresponding General MIDI patch has
been applied and it works normally with your card with
    GM emulation enabled.

 2) Copy the correct .DRV and .HLP files (see titles later)
to game directory and run INSTALL.EXE. For SQ4 Diskette
version you may skip the .HLP file.

 3) Select "Sound Blaster AWE32 (XXX.DRV)" for the music
driver. If case of warning for sound hardware not being
detected, install anyway (see Notes later).

 4) For both AWE16.DRV and AWE16_P.DRV titles, run
AWEUTIL /EM:GM before launching the game. AWEUTIL /U can
be used to unload the emulation.

Note: The more recent versions of AWEUTIL can load
themselves to higher memory area preserving precious
       conventional memory.

Notes
-----
o The below titles have been verified to work with a Pentium
90MHz/Intel Zappa system (de-turbo selected if required) with
a Sound Blaster AWE32 CT2760 sound card with 2MB sound card
   memory.

   AWE16.DRV and AWE16_P.DRV:

Hoyle Classic Card Games, Island of Dr. Brain, Space Quest 5,
Conquests of the Longbow, EcoQuest 1 (Diskette version),
Hoyle's Book of Games 3, Leisure Suit Larry 1 (VGA Version),
Leisure Suit Larry 5, Space Quest 1 (VGA version),
Space Quest 4 (Diskette version), Quest for Flory 3,
Leisure Suit Larry 6 (Diskette version), Laura Bow 2 (CD-ROM
   version), King's Quest 6 (CD-ROM version)

   AWE32.DRV:

Leisure Suit Larry 6 (CD-ROM version), Quest for Glory 4 (CD-ROM
version), Police Quest 4 (CD-ROM version)

o The following titles did not work (no music) with the machine
mentioned above and the AWE16.DRV driver:

Quest for Glory 1 (VGA version),
   Space Quest 4 (CD-ROM version)

   while GENMIDI.DRV worked normally.

o AWE_P.DRV seems to experience less of handing notes then
   GENMIDI.DRV

o AWE16.DRV and AWE16_P.DRV seem to differ only by one byte,
   at 09BFH, AWE16.DRV has 07H while AWE16_P.DRV has 0CH

o INSTALL.EXE version 3.758 (shipped with Quest for Flory 4 CD)
seems to detect the Sound Blaster AWE32 card so it will not
warn of sound card not being detected. Previous versions of
INSTALL.EXE may do this (except for the installer for SQ4
   diskette version)
